Virginia Professor Named
Team Member of Month

Cited for "Unparalleled" Support of Marine Resources

NOAA Fisheries has named Dr. John Graves as NOAA’s Team Member of the Month. Dr. Graves is being honored for his “unselfish and tireless contributions to NOAA fisheries management.” He is also a teacher, researcher and department chair at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary. For the past seven years, Dr. Graves has been the elected chair of the Advisory Committee for the United States segment of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). During his tenure, there has been unparalleled progress in supporting living marine resources. With the goal of building sustainable fisheries, ICCAT has established historic rebuilding programs for western Atlantic bluefin tuna and North Atlantic swordfish. ICCAT members now have cutting-edge compliance rules. State-of-the art processes for addressing problem fishing have been established for non-ICCAT members. The first-ever comprehensive management plan for Atlantic tunas, sharks and swordfish has been developed.

Much of this international and national progress in managing fish stocks can be traced back to the counsel provided by ICCAT’s Advisory Committee, led by Dr. Graves.
