Named for a pioneer of the fishing industry, and based in Kodiak, Alaska, the ship’s total ecosystem approach will, in three years, greatly exceed the current capabilities of the NOAA fleet. Also participating were Mrs. Catherine Stevens, wife of Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska; Rear Admiral Evelyn J. Fields, director of OMAO; and Richard McCreary and Anil Raj, of Halter Marine, Inc., shipbuilders.
