OMAO Honors Employees -- & the McARTHUR

The Office of Marine and Aviation Operations honored six staff members - and one ship - at its Annual Command Conference last month. The OMAO fleet supports a wide range of marine activities, including fisheries research, nautical charting/mapping, and long-range ocean and climate studies.

For the first time in its 36 years, the McARTHUR worked in both the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico. It supported the Sustainable Seas Expedition by exploring coral and hard bottom communities off Belize and Texas, supported a reef fish study and marine mammal assessment studies, and transited the Panama Canal for work on tuna, among other projects. When an early season hurricane developed literally on top of the ship, its crew had to ride out tremendous seas for 48 hours.
