INTRODUCING....

The NOAA Table of Organization

An automated database system capable of
providing detailed and summary level information on both authorized positions and actual onboard personnel. This tool will allow management to view personnel data in traditional organization charts, print specialized reports, respond to queries, and track personnel movements in a real-time environment.

Lautenbacher Visits CREST Center in NYC

NOAA Administrator Conrad Lautenbacher visited the NOAA-CREST Center at City College in New York last month to help celebrate the center’s second anniversary. CREST, the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center, helps NOAA with remote sensing of atmospheric climatic forcing agents, coastal and inland waters, while building a strong minority graduate training program. City College is the program’s lead institution; other participating colleges include Bowie State University, Hampton University, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.

NOAA and Weather Channel Partner on Forecast Earth

As part of a unique partnership with NOAA, the Weather Channel will air a five-part “El Niño” special series of reports April 21 – 25, airing during the cable network’s popular primetime program “Evening Edition.”

The “El Niño” specials will be comprised of five different vignettes, including a look at how many coastal communities in California are literally “sliding into the sea” due to damage caused by El Niño. In the first vignette, the Weather Channel and NOAA attempt to shed light on why these particular communities are being affected so harshly, and how measurements NOAA is taking thousands of miles away, including from space may hold the answer. Other segments deal with hurricane season, and the wide ranging effects of El Niño.

A weather service project manager who supervised the move of a radar station, and a fisheries specialist who beat the clock on an impact statement are the NOAA Employee and Team Member of the Month for April. Read about their exploits in this month’s issue of NOAA Report.

Sharing Research in South Africa

Harold Brooks, research meteorologist from the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, was a presenter during the Sasol SciFest in Grahamstown, South Africa, in March. During the trip, he spent about four days at the South African Weather Service Forecast Office in Pretoria, presenting several lectures on forecast verification and discussing a variety of research topics. He also presented seminars at the University of Pretoria in Pretoria and Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

Enough Snow

At the risk of beckoning the return of winter, or becoming your all-snow-all-the-time online news source, here’s a photo looking outside from the living room of NOAA staffer Barbara Poppe in Boulder, Colo. Barbara says she lives 15 miles west of Boulder, but 3,000 feet above it, at 8,300 feet. In deference to the season, though, no more snow pictures (although Barbara’s moose-upholstered chair is kinda neat). Instead, we’d appreciate photos of cute little bunnies hippity-hopping on lush, verdant green grass.)
