Hosts Chinese Meteorologists
|
| A
delegation of nine meteorologists from the People’s
Republic of China Yunnan Provincial Meteorological Bureau
toured the NWS Forecast Office in Lincoln, Illinois in late
November. The tour, which was arranged with the assistance
of NOAA’s International Activities office and The 21st
Century Institute of Chicago/Beijing/Shanghai, was part of
a two-week visit to the United States by the Chinese delegation.

Years of Air Quality Modeling

| Celebrating
the 50th anniversary of air quality modeling at a recent NOAA/EPA
symposium in Research Triangle Park, N.C. were NOAA Deputy
Administrator Dr. James Mahoney
and S.T. Rao, director of NOAA’s
Atmospheric Sciences Modeling Division. The event was sponsored
by the American Meteorological Society.

Alaska
Governor Visits Fairweather
|
Alaska
governor Frank Murkowski visited the NOAA ship Fairweather
in Ketchikan, Alaska, on a snowy Saturday earlier this
month, accompanied by Alaska transportation commissioner Mike
Barton. The tour focused on the status of bathymetry and soundings
in Tongass Narrows with an eye toward future transportation
projects in the Ketchikan area. Fairweather executive officer
LCDR E.J. Van Den Ameele led the
briefing and was assisted by ENS Jonathan French
and ENS Wendy Lewis. Senior survey
technician Grant Froelich, and survey
technicians Verena Kellner and Mike
Castle provided detailed displayed of 3-D bathymetry
in Tongass Narrows and displayed the latest technology used
to acquire and process high resolution multibeam bathymetry.

| NOAA’s
Northwest Fisheries Science Center has initiated a pilot mentoring
program to enhance opportunities for the sharing of knowledge
and skills among employees. The program is intended to foster
helpful professional relationships that provide information,
encouragement and enhance career direction. The science center
is looking forward to continuing this program in successive
years and hopes to encourage other NOAA line offices to get
involved in similar mentoring efforts.
