Administrator’s Awards Highlight Top Accomplishments

More than 175 NOAA employees and team members were honored last month at the NOAA Administrator’s Awards ceremony in Silver Spring, Md. Awardees came from all line offices and many staff offices, and celebrated diverse accomplishments, including promoting stewardship of Alaska’s living marine resources, oversight of the renovation of the seventh and eighth floors of the World Weather Building in Camp Springs, Md., and designation of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine research reserve.

Also honored with the Administrator’s Special Recognition award was Dr. Berrien Moore, director of the University of New Hampshire's Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. NOAA Administrator Lautenbacher praised Dr. Moore for his "extraordinary leadership as chair of the NOAA Research Review Team and his lifelong contributions to the improved understanding of Earth, oceans, and space.” The NOAA Research Review Team is part of the agency's Science Advisory Board.

Reyna Sabina, Yeun-Ho Daneshzadeh, and Claudia Schmid (left to right) flanked by NOAA Administrator Lautenbacher and NOAA Research director Richard Rosen, were honored for pioneering the development of a system to deliver quality controlled, global ocean data in real time to international operational and research oceanographic communities.

Louisiana Wetlands Projects Feted

On May 21, 2004, NOAA Deputy Assistant Secretary Timothy Keeney, and Office of Habitat Conservation Director, Rolland Schmitten joined U.S. Senator John Breaux at Fort Jackson in Louisiana to celebrate six habitat restoration projects completed under the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act, also known as the Breaux Act. NOAA Fisheries led three of the six projects providing more than $8.5 million to help stabilize coastal Louisiana wetlands and provide critical habitat for commercially valuable fish and wildlife.

The dedication event also provided an opportunity for Keeney to present Jack Caldwell, former Secretary of Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, with a 2004 Environmental Hero Award for his unwavering commitment to coastal restoration and his significant contribution to environmental stewardship.

Nebraska National Weather Service Staffers Laud 4th Graders

Tables were turned at a Nebraska school as local fourth grade students autographed copies of their new book, Dizzy Disasters: Nebraska & Beyond, for NWS staffers of the weather forecast office in Hastings. The book, written by the Heartland Public School’s fourth grade class, is a collection of stories about Nebraska area severe weather events.

Michael Lewis, NWS Hastings Meteorologist in Charge, Steven Kisner, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, and Todd Holsten, Lead Meteorologist attended the book signing. Lewis congratulated the students on a job well done and saluted the teachers for an excellent project. Todd was an additional highlight for the class as he recounted a couple of his own weather stories of chasing severe thunderstorms. After the event, Todd was sought by the students for him to autograph their copy of the book.
