Lightning
Safety is Her Goal
|
| The
official start of summer heralds the peak season for a deadly
and yet dangerously misunderstood weather phenomena—lightning.
In an effort to save lives, the NOAA National Weather Service
and Olympic Medalist Siri Mullinix, goalkeeper for the Women’s
United Soccer Association’s (WUSA) Washington Freedom,
are campaigning to alert the nation to the dangers of lightning.
The campaign runs year round and kicked off during nationwide
Lightning Awareness Week, June 22-28. Mullinix is featured
in a national television public service announcement that
will air on stations around the country, as well as on safety
posters designed for schools, stadiums and sporting goods
stores.

| Lautenbacher
Feted by Fisheries Institute |
| NOAA
Administrator Lautenbacher was recently cited by
the National Fisheries Institute for “nearly 40 years
of service to the American people.” Honored with the
group's Public Service Award, Lautenbacher was recognized
for focusing "his intellect and experience on the work
of the Department of Commerce and NOAA in establishing sound
ocean policies for the United States.” NFI President
John Connelly underscored that the Navy regularly called on
the Vice Admiral to take on new challenges, and that his "innovative
approaches, initiatives and sound management techniques led
to many of the successes the Navy recently experienced in
the war on terrorism.” Connelly indicated that NFI is
pleased to continue to work with Lautenbacher “as he
reshapes NOAA to ensure the balance between environmental
protection and the sustainable use of ocean resources.”
