Want to Know About NOAA?

Big Time for Littlehales

About to be renamed the NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson, and recently transferred to NOAA from the Navy, the Navy Ship Littlehales arrived in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor last month, ready to showcase her important mission of conducting hydrographic surveys to update NOAA charts. NOAA Administrator Lautenbacher joined the Commanding Officer, Commander Steve Barnum, and his crew in explaining the ship’s workings to congressional staffers.

Lightning Safety is Her Goal

The official start of summer heralds the peak season for a deadly and yet dangerously misunderstood weather phenomena—lightning. In an effort to save lives, the NOAA National Weather Service and Olympic Medalist Siri Mullinix, goalkeeper for the Women’s United Soccer Association’s (WUSA) Washington Freedom, are campaigning to alert the nation to the dangers of lightning. The campaign runs year round and kicked off during nationwide Lightning Awareness Week, June 22-28. Mullinix is featured in a national television public service announcement that will air on stations around the country, as well as on safety posters designed for schools, stadiums and sporting goods stores.

Washington Freedom goalie Siri Mullinix reserves lightning for her reflexes, not her game-day weather. She’s featured in a NOAA lightning safety campaign.

Gulf Council's Hood Honored

NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Administrator Roy Crabtree (left), on behalf of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, presented a plaque last month to Peter Hood in recognition and appreciation of more than four years of distinguished and dedicated service to the people of the Gulf States. Hood came to the region's sustainable fisheries division last March. He served as a research fishery biologist at the Florida Marine Research Institute for 11 years prior joining the Gulf Council in 1999.

Bodman Welcomes Marine Committee

Commerce Deputy Secretary Sam Bodman welcomed the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee at their inaugural meeting last month, and provided an overview of NOAA’s Marine Protected Areas programs and mission. Bodman highlighted the partnership between the Departments of Commerce and the Interior at the meeting, which was held in the Commerce auditorium in Washington.

Lautenbacher Feted by Fisheries Institute

NOAA Administrator Lautenbacher was recently cited by the National Fisheries Institute for “nearly 40 years of service to the American people.” Honored with the group's Public Service Award, Lautenbacher was recognized for focusing "his intellect and experience on the work of the Department of Commerce and NOAA in establishing sound ocean policies for the United States.” NFI President John Connelly underscored that the Navy regularly called on the Vice Admiral to take on new challenges, and that his "innovative approaches, initiatives and sound management techniques led to many of the successes the Navy recently experienced in the war on terrorism.” Connelly indicated that NFI is pleased to continue to work with Lautenbacher “as he reshapes NOAA to ensure the balance between environmental protection and the sustainable use of ocean resources.”
