Welcomes New Head of Ocean Service
|
| NOAA
Administrator Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr.
spoke at the Oceanology International Americas 2003 conference
last month, giving what he called NOAA's "unique perspective"
as the Federal government's “operational ecosystem science
agency.” He also acknowledged one of the conference's
co-chairs, Dr. Rick Spinrad, who had just left the office
of Oceanographer of the Navy to become head of the NOAA Ocean
Service. "We are honored to have you aboard, Rick,"
he added.

We
may have lost our home team here in Washington in 1971, but
that doesn’t mean that we’re not a baseball town,
as proven by the more than 80 NOAA employees who took the
bus to Baltimore’s Camden Yards to watch the Orioles
play the Philadelphia Phillies last month. They got their
money’s worth, even though they didn't see the game
through. The group left at midnight after 14 innings, with
the score tied 1-1. (The Phillies eventually won in hot, humid,
sweat-pouring- off-your-back 17 innings.)

| Who's
that with NOAA's Capt. Sam DeBow (right) on Eutaw Street
outside Baltimore's Camden Yards? It's famed Orioles
slugger and barbeque maven Boog Powell.

| A
small showing of patriotism by some Coastal Services Center
employees in Charleston, SC, made a big impact recently. Two
Navy supply ships docked next to the Center, and some NOAA
employees whose windows face the ships posted a sign reading
"Thank You" on the window and hung an American flag.
