New
Admirals Take Corps, NMAO Helm
|
| The
NOAA Corps and Marine and Aviation Operations got new leadership
this month when the U.S. Senate confirmed Capt.
Samuel P. De Bow Jr. as Corps and NMAO director,
while also confirming Capt. Richard R. Behn
as director of Marine and Aviation Operations Centers. Upon
confirmation, both captains were promoted to rear admiral.
De Bow is now a two-star admiral
(upper half); Behn is a one-star
admiral (lower-half). A formal assumption of command ceremony,
to take place at Robinson Terminal in Old Town Alexandria,
Va., with NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson alongside, is
scheduled for Sept. 10.

NOAA
Hosts Cooperative Damage Assessment Workshop
|
| NOAA
co-sponsored a groundbreaking Cooperative Damage Assessment
Workshop in June, bringing together federal, state, and tribal
natural resource trustee agencies, along with private industry,
all with the same goal of restoring the environment. This
workshop is the first time these diverse groups met for a
two-day problem-solving session. Twenty companies and 28 states
were represented in the 170 practitioners who attended.
| |
Stakeholder
participants are actively engaged in addressing how
to improve cooperation in the damage assessment process.
The participants suggested possible solutions for
potential roadblocks to cooperation.

Michigan
Offices Collaborate on Outreach
|
| The
Gaylord and Detroit, Michigan, National Weather Service offices,
along with the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Great
Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), all worked
together during the month of July to bring NOAA’s message
to the public. On July 4th, NOAA's Thunder Bay National Marine
Sanctuary held its annual Mariner’s Day in Alpena, Michigan.
Meteorologist-in-charge Gary Campbell
and forecaster Keith Berger from
the NWS Gaylord Office attended and staffed a booth, while
GLERL brought their NOAA Science Vessel Laurentian
in dock for public tours.
Further south, the Detroit National Weather Service office
hosted a science teacher “externship” from the
Detroit Public School District. Science teacher Laura Speegle
shadowed Brian Montgomery, NWS forecaster,
as well as visiting GLERL, and meeting with a local emergency
manager.
