Multi-agency
Team Removes Abandoned Gear From Puget Sound
|
| NOAA
participated in a multi-agency diver training exercise to
remove hazardous abandoned fishing gear in Puget Sound, Wash.
This partnership of federal and state agencies was highlighted
when Navy divers received training at the NOAA Dive Center
and removed derelict fishing gear from Puget Sound. Navy divers
received instruction and hands-on exposure from the Washington
Department of Natural Resources divers, local experts in derelict
net removal, to help them better carry out this dangerous,
but critical task.
|
|
Tim
Keeney, NOAA deputy assistant secretary, represented
NOAA and Coastal America, dove with the Navy Divers
to experience the training first-hand.

Stevens Visits Sea Grant
|
| Alaska
Sen. Ted Stevens addressed the crowd at Fairbanks' annual Red,
White and Blue Military Appreciation Day Garden Party this month,
sponsored by Alaska Sea Grant, as it has been for the past three
summers. By preparing and serving Alaska-grown oysters and clams,
Alaska Sea Grant uses this event to highlight its efforts to
help develop a shellfish aquaculture industry in Alaska.
Sen.
Stevens was joined by Bill Williams and Jeff Moran, from the
Metlakatla Tribal Council, and Ray RaLonde,
Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program Aquaculture
Specialist. Stevens was instrumental in arranging for a large
grant to help the Tribal Council start its successful shellfish
aquaculture pilot project, which promises to lead to much
needed economic development at Metlakatla. Lesson learned
there will extend to other parts of the state that are suitable
for shellfish aquaculture. RaLonde was instrumental in organizing
the project, playing a key role in getting the pilot aquaculture
project off the ground.
|
|
| Sen.
Ted Stevens thanked Alaska Sea Grant and other sponsors
for helping put on the annual event, which is held to
acknowledge gratitude for the military's service to
the state and nation. |
