Evans Rides Out Ivan

Commerce Secretary Donald Evans had the ride of his life aboard the NOAA WP-3D Orion "hurricane hunter" Kermit during Hurricane Ivan. The turbulent September 13 flight lasted six bone-shaking hours, but he's still smiling.

Sen. Nelson takes a look at Charley

Earlier, two days before Hurricane Charley crashed ashore, Florida Sen. Bill Nelson accompanied the NOAA G-IV hurricane surveillance jet on a mission to take a look at the massive storm’s destructive environment. Sen. Nelson, who has previously flown aboard the space shuttle, was enthusiastic about the technology and amount of storm-related data streaming back real-time to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction. During the busy eight and a half hour flight, Sen. Nelson found time to learn how to quality assure data from dropwindsonde instruments profiling the atmosphere below the high-flying jet, and to phone in a number of first-person accounts of what was being seen and reported by the crew.

Nation’s Mayors Learn About NOAA Programs

This summer’s 72nd Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors held in Boston showcased many NOAA programs, including NOAA All Hazards Radio, which will expand its services to create an All Hazards network. Stan Johnson from NOAA All Hazards Radio and Caren Madsen from the NOAA Office of Public, Constituent and Intergovernmental Affairs staffed the exhibit with help from Alan Dunham, a meteorologist from the Boston Weather Forecast Office.

At the 72nd Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors were (left to right) Caren Madsen, NOAA Public Affairs; Bill Mischler, Mayor of Pinellas Park, Fla.; David G. Wallace, Mayor of Sugar Land, Tex.; and Stan Johnson, NOAA Weather Radio - All Hazards.
