Restoration
Center Celebrates Success
|
|
Over 100 local,
state, and federal participants joined staff from NOAA’s
Office of Habitat Conservation in late September to celebrate
restored tidal flow to the new Dingley Island causeway bridge
in Harpswell, Maine, a critical fisheries habitat in Casco
Bay. Maine’s Governor John E. Baldacci praised NOAA
for its role in this community-based restoration project recognizing
the strong partnerships necessary for project success.

Senator
Allen Visits National Weather Service
|
| Virginia
Senator George Allen and several staff members made a special
visit to the Wakefield, Va. National Weather Service Forecast
office in September to thank the staff for their excellent
performance and dedication during and after Hurricane Isabel.
“You
threaded the needle with the forecast,” said the senator,
son of the late Washington football coach.
He
also made it clear that his thanks extended to the entire
NWS for their efforts, and noted how well forecast the storm
was. Sen. Allen told the staff he had talked to many local
Virginia citizens, and everyone had praise for the job that
weather service did.

Shipwreck Found in Alaska
|
| In
July 2003, Dr. Bradley Stevens,
a Research Fisheries Biologist with NOAA’s Kodiak Laboratory,
led a team of volunteer divers to discover the wreckage of
the Russian sailing ship Kad’yak, which sank in Alaskan
waters in 1860. Working on his own time, Dr. Stevens used
translations of old Russian documents to help him estimate
the ship’s position. Using a magnetometer, the divers
located the wreckage in two days, roughly 100 meters from
its estimated position.
The Kad’yak is historically significant because it is
the only shipwreck from the Russian colonial period ever discovered
in Alaska, and also the oldest known shipwreck in Alaska.

| Silver
Spring Thanksgiving Parade
|
| A
contingent of NOAA staffers marched through the streets of
Silver Spring, Md., last week in the town’s Thanksgiving
Parade. This marked the first time NOAA has participated in
the community event, which featured about 75 local organizations,
members of Congress and Montgomery County officials and “Capt.
Fish,” a NOAA mascot who looks to be a refugee from
the British Royal Navy.
