Buoys Key in Hurricane

At New Orleans' Lakefront Airport, three members of NOAA's National Data Buoy Center staff helped educate kids about the key role of buoys in hurricane safety. Tina Reid, Eric Meindl and Dave Gilhousen displayed a 3-meter buoy, one of the few sources of wave measurements during a hurricane. Buoy wind measurements help define the radius of hurricane and gale force winds. Buoys also sometimes help determine that a tropical depression or storm, even before hurricane hunters are dispatched. The event was a feature of the National Weather Service's Gulf Coast Hurricane Awareness Tour.
