Nepal's Sherpas
Sport National Marine Sanctuary T-Shirts

When Andrea Hrusovsky treked Everest Base Camp in Nepal last fall, she took along Channel Island National Marine Sanctuary T-shirts for the Sherpa guides that led her to Mt. Everest. Andrea has been Executive Officer of the sanctuary since June 2000. She is shown here with her guides at 13,000 feet, and with the lead Sherpa at the summit of 18,600-foot Kala Patar.

In the NOAA Corps for 14 years, Andrea said it was amazing to hike at 15,000 feet, realize she was as high as the tallest continental U.S. mountains, and still gaze up at the Himalayas towering nearly twice as high. The 22-day trek fulfilled her dream of "seeing firsthand the tallest mountain on the planet."

Andrea is no couch potato at home. She's been a certified NOAA Working Diver since 1989 and a NOAA pilot since 1990. She's also a certified flight instructor and a veteran of sea assignments on NOAA's Albatross IV and Macolm Baldrige. In May, Andrea's off to climb Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the continental U.S. In September, she heads to Peru for an 11-day hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
