New York City - The 90-foot RUDE, smallest
ship in NOAA's fleet, will help celebrate the new Hudson River
Park, a five-mile, 550 acre site along the Hudson River in
New York City. Some 100,000 people are expected at the event.
Visitors can climb aboard the RUDE from 1 pm
until 7 pm. In July 1996, the little ship located the wreckage
of TWA Flight 800. Almost exactly three years later, it found
John F. Kennedy's downed aircraft off the Massachusetts coast.
Last year RUDE helped ensure that the largest-ever
assembly of U.S. and foreign ships could safely transit New
York Harbor for OpSail 2000. RUDE surveyed
the harbor, ensuring that critical navigation charts could
be updated in record time. Much to local surprise, RUDE
found six sunken vessels during the survey.
