A research laboratory's success depends on both outstanding scientific
achievement and dedicated staff support. Working behind the scenes to
support cutting-edge research, Nina M. Liebig demonstrates how this works
best. To recognize her steadfast efforts, she is being honored as NOAA's
August Employee of the Month.
Nina is a budget analyst at NOAA Research's Atlantic Oceanographic and
Meteorological Laboratory in Miami. Despite a hefty pile of responsibilities,
and tugs from staff often grappling with administrative concerns, Nina
is described as having an uncanny ability to detect an error, tease out
the reason it's occurring, and determine the best way to solve it.
Wth a solid grasp of administrative policy at her fingertips, Nina is
responsible for budget and personnel projections, analysis, monitoring,
and planning. She is an organizational wizard, a master at storing data
and information for rapid, accurate response. She is adept at composing
reports and crafting charts that readily communicate on-target messages.
To strengthen personnel management, Nina built a new labor database that
has vastly improved labor projections and eased understanding of laboratory
demographics. She ensures that contracts and grants are in compliance,
oversees 250 bankcard transactions each month, and monitors input into
the NOAA-wide financial management system. She is in particular demand
during the lab's year-end close-out!

with her knowledge. The nomination letter from NOAA Research underscored
that, "when Nina receives training, it is evident that the entire administrative
team benefits."
