September 18 - NOAA teams up with
Hawaii SeaGrant, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Coast Guard and
others to host a four-day media tour showcasing how scientists in the
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are saving the Hawaiian monk seal, the nation's
most endangered marine mammal. The tour provides a firsthand look at a
marine debris project that last year recovered over 25 tons of debris
in 29 days. By identifying sources of derelict gear, data collected can
help educate fishermen. The marine debris project is also a big success
story in saving coral reefs.
