Tony Wu, a contractor employed by RGII Technologies, is NOAA's newest
Team Member of the Month. As network engineer to the NOAA Network
Operations Center, Tony has placed NOAA in the forefront of Internet accessibility.
He ensured a smooth outcome in the complex transition that brought about
fundamental change in NOAA's Washington area routing strategies. Tony
says that, "no complaints" are his biggest compliment.
Working
with his counterparts at NASA and the University of Maryland, he developed
a strategic plan to test equipment and its ability to perform such activities
as security filters at Gigabit speed. In the process, he exposed weaknesses
that had been undetected even by vendors. Tony's test results are now
being used as the basis of similar acquisitions by NASA and the University
of Maryland.
Tony's
efforts to bring change to NOAA's routing strategies has dramatically
affected our ability to communicate internally and with the research
and other communities. It has also alleviated pressure on other systems.
As just one significant example, NOAA is now able to communicate more
effectively during the present hurricane season. The new service is
also the basis for NOAA's use of the next generation of network technology.
Throughout
the transition, Tony and his three-person technical team continued their
committed service to the National Ocean Service and to the entire NOAA
community, working long hours, responding to late night trouble calls,
and arriving at a moment's notice to advise local network managers about
problems on new designs.
While Tony
and his team are invisible to most of NOAA, their work is not. Most
frequently, they show up only when something is not working. Thanks
to Tony's leadership, that is not too often.
